Accessibility Statement

We want every Tower Hamlets resident, worker and student to be able to use this website - regardless of ability or assistive technology. Here’s what we do, what we’re still improving, and how to reach us if something doesn’t work for you.

Who this statement covers

This accessibility statement applies to quitrightth.org (the QuitRight Tower Hamlets website). It is maintained by the Wolfson Institute of Population Health at Queen Mary University of London, which delivers the service.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. That means you should be able to:

  • Change colours, contrast levels and fonts in your browser
  • Zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • Navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • Navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the latest versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand. AbilityNet has advice on making your own device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

Following our April 2026 audit, we fixed several WCAG 2.1 AA issues. The site now includes:

  • Skip to main content link on every page (press Tab when the page loads) - meets WCAG 2.4.1 Bypass Blocks
  • Visible keyboard focus ring on every link, button and form field - meets WCAG 2.4.7 Focus Visible
  • Darker teal text colour (#0f766e) for body links and text so it passes the 4.5:1 contrast ratio - meets WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum)
  • Proper <main> landmark region around every page's primary content so screen readers can jump straight to it - meets WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships
  • Live status announcements on the cookie preference banner so screen readers confirm when your choice has been saved - meets WCAG 4.1.3 Status Messages
  • Keyboard-operable navigation, hamburger menu and all interactive controls (we test with Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter and Space only)
  • Resizable text up to 300% without content being clipped or requiring horizontal scrolling
  • Descriptive alt text on informational images, with decorative images marked so assistive technology skips them

We know some parts of this website are still not fully accessible:

  • Some older PDF documents may not be fully compatible with screen readers
  • Embedded third-party content (such as Google Maps on the Contact page or the Calendly booking widget) does not always identify every field programmatically
  • The six training videos on the Health & Social Care Professionals page do not yet have closed captions or written transcripts. We are working with our parent organisation to add them

Reporting accessibility problems

QuitRight offers one-to-one support in person, by phone, WhatsApp and video. If you find it easier to speak to a specialist directly rather than use the website, simply call or WhatsApp us and a stop smoking advisor will help you book a consultation. This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard. The non-compliances are listed below.

Non-accessible content

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • Training videos without captions - the six training videos on the Health & Social Care Professionals page do not yet have closed captions or written transcripts. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.2.2 (Captions - Prerecorded). We are working with our parent organisation to add them. In the meantime, if you need the content in another format please contact us.
  • Embedded third-party content - the Google Maps embed on our Contact page does not always identify every form field programmatically. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.5 (Identify Input Purpose). We rely on Google to fix this in a future release.
  • Booking widget - the Calendly booking embed is controlled by a third party and its accessibility improvements are managed by Calendly. If you can’t use it, please call or WhatsApp us and we will book on your behalf.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

  • Older PDF documents published before 23 September 2018 are exempt from the regulations unless users specifically need them to access a service. Please contact us if you need a document in an accessible format.

How we test this website

We test this website using:

  • Automated tools including axe DevTools and Google Lighthouse for WCAG 2.1 checks
  • Manual keyboard-only navigation testing
  • Screen reader testing with NVDA (Windows) and VoiceOver (macOS / iOS)
  • High contrast and 300% zoom rendering in Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

April 2026 audit - completed fixes:

  • Added a “Skip to main content” link on every page
  • Added a visible keyboard focus ring on every interactive control
  • Darkened the teal body-text colour to pass the 4.5:1 contrast ratio
  • Wrapped page content in a proper <main> landmark
  • Added live status announcements to the cookie preference banner

Still in progress:

  • Adding closed captions and transcripts to the six training videos on the Health & Social Care Professionals page
  • Replacing embedded third-party widgets with accessible alternatives where possible
  • Running regular audits and inviting feedback from service users with lived experience of assistive technology
